Tagua Jewelry A New Trend in Fashion

Nowadays, the trendy artisan jewelry is becoming very popular in fashion fanatics. Apart from traditional gold and diamond jewelry the other form of jewelry that is attracting people is the Tagua jewelry. Tagua is a seed from palm tree, which is found in the north eastern part of South America (Ecuador, Panama and Colombia) and used extensively for jewelry making. Tagua jewelry not only looks different but it is also very economical when compared to gold and diamond jewelry. Recently, Tagua jewelry is used by many jewelry designers in Europe, especially France, in the United States and Canada and in Asia. It has been showcased in many of the fashion shows in America and is liked by the audiences.

Another thing which makes Tagua jewelry so popular is its eco friendliness. It is directly retained from the Tagua tree. Only the ripe nuts are gathered, so the harvest does not affect the forest. Instead it gives an incentive to protect the forest as it supplies an income to the dwellers.

Also tagua does not need chemical processing like the precious metals for other jewelries, hence saves lots of carbon emission and helps protecting the environment.

The Tagua palm tree can live up to 35 years and usually doesn’t exceed twenty feet. It has the low growth rate and completely matures after 15 years. The seeds are extracted from the fruits which are present in the clusters of the tree. Each cluster weights around 25 pounds and has about 50 to 60 seeds inside. The Tagua nuts come in different sizes, some of them are as small as olive and some of them are as big as an orange, the average size of nuts being around 4 cms. As the Tagua nuts are small sometimes it needs to be combined with other pieces to make ideal jewelry. The Tagua nuts have a brown skin and to attain a marble look the skin is partially peeled and polished. To obtain creamy white and ivory color the skin is completely peeled. Other colors are obtained dyeing either with natural dyes extracted from the roots and flowers or with convetional textile dyes. The Tagua nuts are cut, drilled and polished in various shapes depending on the design and requirement.

The use of the Tagua nut was first discovered in early 19the century and until in the late World War II the industry had been established in three continents majorly. First it was established in most of the countries in Europe. In the late Victorian era Tagua beads were used to make some fancy ivory items such as dices, jewelry, handles, bags etc, later becoming the most used material for clothing buttons. After the advent of synthetic plastic the use of Tagua in making various items went down. These days, the environmental friendly organizations are very active in protecting the environment and stop killing of endangered species. The other way Tagua is widely promoted because it is good earning source for the tribals and villagers living in remote rain forest areas of Amazon. For some of them Tagua farming is the only source for their bread and butter. The Tagua tree is very efficient in producing the same amount of ivory which is been produced by an elephant and equivalent to the vegetable ivory.
